In a new ordinance proponents believe is the first of its kind in the nation, Mayor Dianne Feinstein has signed a measure calling for some San Francisco office developers to provide child-care services. Scheduled to take effect in 30 days, the law would provide “an infusion of money into the child-care area and pave the way for more child-care facilities,” the mayor said. The measure affects office development outside the downtown area and requires developers of new or rehabilitated office space of at least 50,000 square feet or more to pay $1 per square foot into a child-care fund, or to include a facility for that purpose.
