A gunman was slain and a Los Angeles police officer wounded in a shoot-out in Wilmington. Police said Officers Geoffrey Taylor and John T. Wrich stopped a pickup truck in the 2000 block of F Street after noticing that it was moving erratically. The driver of the truck got out, and opened fire with a handgun, his bullets striking Officer Taylor, 36, in the hand and chest, with another bullet lodging in a bullet-proof vest. The two officers returned the fire and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. Taylor, 36, was reported in satisfactory condition after treatment at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital. The gunman was not identified, pending notification of next of kin. Lt. Charles Higbie said investigators are trying to determine why the man began shooting.
