Soledad State Prison was locked down after a night in which guards fired 10 shots to quell violence that left 31 people wounded, prison authorities say. The melee erupted in a three-tier wing housing about 350 inmates and continued for 20 minutes before guards armed with batons and guns brought the inmates under control, said Herb Matthews, prison community resources manager. Six guards and 25 inmates were injured in the violence, he said, adding that two inmates were in area hospitals with serious wounds. Matthews said the violence apparently began as a fight between Latinos from Northern California and Southern California.
