BONN — Richard R. Burt, former State Department assistant secretary for European and Canadian affairs, arrived in Bonn on Monday to take up his new post as U.S. ambassador to West Germany.
The former New York Times reporter, 38, will present his credentials to President Richard von Weizsaecker on Friday, an embassy spokesman said.
Burt, 38, replaces economist Arthur F. Burns, 81, who left Bonn in mid-May for retirement in the United States. The Bonn embassy is the biggest U.S. diplomatic mission in the world with 800 employees.
