A passenger on a motorcycle who was killed early Monday when the cycle slammed into the rear of a flatbed construction truck on a closed portion of the Costa Mesa Freeway was identified Tuesday as Kathleen R. Powers, 25, of Newport Beach, a deputy Orange County coroner said.
Powers was riding on a motorcycle driven by James Readinger, 25, of Santa Ana, who also was killed when the cycle collided with the truck near Lincoln Avenue in Orange, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred on an eight-mile stretch of the freeway that has been closed during the late-night and early-morning hours for resurfacing.
CHP officials do not know how the cycle avoided rubber cones set at on-ramps to keep vehicles from entering the closed freeway.
