ENCINITAS — Two Mexican farm workers were killed and three injured Sunday when a speeding car struck a group of men gathered at a catering truck, the California Highway Patrol said.
A CHP spokeswoman said the driver of the car, Samuel Conant, 34, of Leucadia, will be charged with felony drunk driving and manslaughter. He was reported in fair condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital. Coroner’s deputies were seeking the identity of one of the men killed who was believed to be in his 20s, and a second victim was tentatively identified as Lenardo Ramos Montez, 16, of Mexico.
Two unidentified men believed to be in their 20s were taken to Palomar Hospital where they were reported in critical condition. A fifth farm worker, Roberto Rodriguez, 27, of Mexico, was reported in fair condition at Sharp Memorial.
The CHP said Conant was driving south on El Camino Real about 7:45 a.m. when his car veered into the men in the 400 block north of Encinitas Boulevard.
