Swiss to Adopt Strict Auto Exhaust Rules

BERN, Switzerland — Officials announced Monday that Switzerland will impose Europe’s strictest automobile emission standards beginning Oct. 1, 1987, to reduce air pollution that is killing forests.
New cars will have to meet standards as stringent as those in effect in the United States since 1983, the Federal Council, Switzerland’s chief executive body, ruled.
About one-third of Switzerland’s trees are dying because of pollution, most of it believed caused by auto exhaust, a 1984 government survey indicated.
The council rejected a proposal to cut highway speed limits to further reduce pollution.
The new emission standards will lead to a 67% to 91% reduction in exhaust pollution.
