The company said it is closing its passenger tire plant in Albany, Ga., and ending passenger-car and truck-tire production at its plant in Des Moines. About 2,050 employees, including 400 salaried workers, will lose their jobs in Albany, a company spokesman said. In Des Moines, 400 hourly workers and 100 salaried workers will be dismissed. Production of tractor tires will be consolidated at the Des Moines plant. The restructuring will result in Firestone Tire & Rubber taking a $100-million pretax charge for its fiscal year ending Oct. 31.
