French Spy Shake-up Ordered

PARIS — President Francois Mitterrand ordered his premier today to reorganize the French secret service, which has been accused of sinking the Greenpeace environmentalist group’s flagship, the Rainbow Warrior, killing a crew member.
In a letter to Premier Laurent Fabius made public by the presidential palace, Mitterrand noted that the French press was uncovering “new elements that we cannot appreciate the reality of, through lack of necessary information from the competent services. This situation cannot continue.” Defense Minister Charles Hernu has acknowledged giving the order for French spies to conduct surveillance of Greenpeace members.
