A-Plant, Shut Down After Safety Failure, Allowed to Restart

WASHINGTON — An Arizona nuclear power plant that was shut down last week after what government regulators called a “significant failure” in a key backup safety system was given approval Friday to restart.
Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials said they were satisfied enough with the commitments made by Arizona Public Service Co. executives during a meeting Friday to allow resumed testing of the Unit 1 reactor at the Palo Verde plant, west of Phoenix.
The NRC ordered the plant shut down last week after a backup system designed to rapidly decrease pressure inside the plant failed during a scheduled test simulating a loss of outside power sources.
