EARTHQUAKES IN MEXICO : World Cup Still On, Officials Say

MEXICO CITY — The Organizing Committee of the 1986 World Cup said Sunday that the 1986 competition will go on in spite of the Mexican earthquakes.
Architects and engineers reported that Mexico City’s two main stadiums had survived intact.
However, a spokesman for the International Football Federation has said the games may have to be shifted to West Germany. Federation officials have scheduled a news conference today in Zurich, Switzerland, on the “possible effects” of the quakes on the championship.
Mexico will host 23 other teams in the monthlong battle in nine Mexican cities and 12 stadiums. The final game is scheduled for June 29 at Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium.
