A 27-year-old roofer was in guarded condition Monday after falling five stories down an elevator shaft at an apartment complex under construction at 512 N. Porter Ave., Santa Ana, fire and hospital spokesmen said.
Tim Rhine of Newport Beach apparently was rolling out roofing tar paper when “he stepped into the shaft backwards,” said Capt. Loren Moyer of the Santa Ana Fire Department.
The open top of the elevator shaft had been covered with plywood, Moyer said, but workers removed the covering in order to apply roofing material.
Rhine was transported by Fire Department paramedics to Western Medical Center, where nursing supervisor Sue Delaney said he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
