Aspartame Challenge Rejected

WASHINGTON — A federal appeals court refused today to order the Food and Drug Administration to hold public hearings on complaints that the artificial sweetener aspartame causes health problems and should be banned until tested further.
A three-member panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the FDA and U.S. District Judge Barrington D. Parker, who dismissed the claims of various consumer organizations that the FDA approved the sweetener without proper testing. The charge has been denied by its manufacturer, G.D. Searle & Co., which markets the product as NutraSweet, and by Coca-Cola, one of its largest customers.
