Tennis Roundup : Anger Upsets Curren at San Francisco

Matt Anger, who had to qualify to earn a berth in the $277,000 Transamerica Open, shocked second-seeded Kevin Curren, the Wimbledon finalist, 7-6, 6-3, Tuesday night at San Francisco.

Anger, 22, a former two-time All-American at USC, went into the tournament ranked 156th on the pro tour in his second year. It was the biggest upset of his career for Anger, a native of Walnut Creek and a resident of Pleasanton.

Curren had been expected to be the only real challenger to top-seeded John McEnroe in this tournament.

In an afternoon match, fourth-seeded Eliot Teltscher lost the first five games against Tim Wilkison, then came back to win, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4.

McEnroe’s first-round match is scheduled for tonight.

Top-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd defeated Vicki Nelson, 6-4, 6-2, in her first match of the $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at New Orleans.

Lloyd got off to a slow start but rallied back from 2-4 in the first set.

“I wasn’t used to the slow indoor court,” Lloyd said. “It was my first indoor match since February. I got used to the pace and served better. I was a different player in the second set. I didn’t want her to dictate the pace of the game.”

Second-seeded Pam Shriver routed Lisa Spain-Short, 6-1, 6-2, and fifth-seeded Wendy Turnbull defeated Tina Mochizuki of South Pasadena, 6-1, 6-1, in other second-round matches.

Also, eighth-seeded Kate Gompert edged JoAnne Russell, 6-4, 7-5; Terry Holladay beat Beverly Mould of South Africa, 6-4, 6-3; Candy Reynolds defeated Yvonne Vermaak of South Africa, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, and Kim Shaefer downed Susan Mascarin, 7-6, 6-4.

At Barcelona, Spain, Mats Wilander of Sweden and Yannick Noah of France scored first-round victories in the 23rd Godo tournament. Wilander defeated Massimo Cierro of Italy, 6-2, 6-1 and Noah topped Juan Avendano of Spain, 7-6, 6-3.
