Responding to city protests, National Hot Rod Assn. officials have promised to take steps to reduce the noise level during drag races held twice a year at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona. Wayne McMurtry, the association’s director of development, said the measures may include the construction of a 25-foot wall, permanent bleachers or buildings around the raceway. McMurtry previously had agreed to start future Sunday races at 11 a.m. instead of 8 a.m.
La Verne City Councilman Thomas R. Harvey said church groups, University of La Verne officials and nearby residents had complained about the noise each time the races were held. The raceway is close to Pomona’s boundary with La Verne.
