A 14-year-old boy who appeared on television and was the subject of newspaper stories in the San Francisco Bay area after he convinced psychologists and pediatricians that he had lost his memory confessed that he was faking and actually was a runaway from Portland, Ore. The youngster, whose real name was withheld because of his age, wandered into a South San Jose pizza parlor Sunday night and asked for help, saying that he could not remember his name or where he lived. Physicians and psychologists said his symptoms indicated “selective amnesia.” But authorities said he finally confessed the hoax under hard questioning by a San Jose police officer.
