Mexico Panda Ailing From Stress, Infection

MEXICO CITY — Pe-Pe, the male panda given to Mexico by China in 1975, is in “delicate health” and has been placed under constant medical watch for treatment of a gastrointestinal illness, the director of Chapultepec Zoo said Friday.
Maria Elene De Hoyos said the 11-year-old panda’s illness is associated with stress and bacterial infection.
She said Pe-Pe is under constant medical care and on a restricted diet in an effort to clear up the infection. The panda suffered similiar ailments in 1977 and 1979.
The zoo director said pandas have a normal life expectancy of 13 to 20 years.
