Riggs Stephenson, who compiled a .336 batting average in 14 years of major league baseball, died at his home in Tuscaloosa, Ala., after a long illness. He was 87.

Stephenson, nicknamed “Old Hoss,” played with the Cleveland Indians from 1921-25 and the Chicago Cubs from 1926-34. In his 1,310 major league games as a third baseman and left fielder, his fielding average was .969.
