Far West Roundup : Stouffer, Bartalo Lead Colorado State Past Utah

Quarterback Kelly Stouffer passed for two touchdowns, both following interception returns by Dan Hammerschmidt, and fullback Steve Bartalo ran for another score as Colorado State upset Utah, 21-19, Saturday in a Western Athletic Conference game at Fort Collins, Colo.
Bartalo, a 5-9, 197-pound junior, rushed for 177 yards in 37 carries on muddy Hughes Stadium turf. His one-yard touchdown plunge put the Rams ahead for good with 9:28 remaining.
The victory gave the Rams an overall record of 5-6, 4-4 in the WAC.
Utah is 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the WAC and all but out of the running for a share of the conference championship.
W. Texas St. 55, New Mexico State 25--Junior quarterback Tod Mayfield threw for five touchdowns and 537 yards, both school records, to lead West Texas State to a nonconference win over New Mexico State at Las Cruces, N.M.
Mayfield completed 35 of 56 passes as the Buffaloes finished the season with a 6-3-1 record. Mayfield also ended the season with a school-record 21 touchdowns.
The Aggies of the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn., who have lost their last seven games, fell to 1-9.
New Mexico 41, Wyoming 16--Junior quarterback Billy Rucker threw four touchdowns and broke three school records to lead the Lobos at Albuquerque, N.M.
Rucker completed 21 of 34 pass attempts and set a single-game passing record of 458 yards, a single-game total offense record of 487 yards and a season-high total offense record of 2,514 yards.
New Mexico improved to 3-7 overall and 2-5 in the WAC. Wyoming is 1-6 in conference and 2-8 overall.
Nevada Reno 48, Nevada Las Vegas 7--Quarterback Eric Beavers threw for 277 yards and four touchdowns to lead Reno to a nonconference victory at Reno.
Beavers’ performance set Reno records for passing yards, attempts, total offense and touchdowns in a season. Reno ended the regular season 10-1, while Las Vegas is 5-5 with one game remaining.
