Use This Release : Actress Anne Baxter Stricken in N.Y.

NEW YORK — Veteran actress Anne Baxter was hospitalized in critical condition Wednesday after collapsing on the street, authorities said.

Baxter, 62, was taken to Lenox Hill Hospital, where doctors said she had suffered a stroke.

Joyce Wagner, her Los Angeles publicist, said the stroke was “serious,” and added: “We don’t know yet what damage has been done. The next 48 hours will tell.”

Baxter, who is the granddaughter of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, currently appears on ABC-TV’s “Hotel” in the role of Victoria Cabot, the wealthy widow who runs the hotel.

Baxter had spent the Thanksgiving holiday at her home in Easton, Conn., and was on her way to her Manhattan hairdresser when she collapsed. She was due to return to Los Angeles next Tuesday to resume filming for “Hotel.”

Baxter won an Academy Award in 1946 for best supporting actress in the hit movie, “The Razor’s Edge.” She later received another nomination for her portrayal of the scheming young actress Eve Harrington in the 1950 film “All About Eve.”
