A body discovered near Tahquitz Canyon above Palm Springs has been identified as that of a Playa del Rey businessman missing since Nov. 10. Riverside County authorities said John Patrick Kivlen, 55, was wearing a sweat-shirt jacket and jeans when he left for a day’s hike in the San Jacinto Mountains. His body was discovered by Dr. William Balschko of the county’s Mountain Search and Rescue Team. Authorities said Balschko found Kivlen’s body in a tree hollow, where he had apparently tried to protect himself with branches and leaves against a sudden and severe snowstorm. Earlier, Balschko said, he had found a paperback book, titled “What They Didn’t Teach You at Harvard Business School,” along a trail, prompting him to search the area.
