The Soviet Union defeated the United States, 7-3, in the opening round of the world junior hockey championships at London, Canada.
The Soviets, who have 10 starters returning from last year’s tournament team, were led by Sergie Gapeenko, who scored two goals.
The U.S. team will play Czechoslovakia tonight, and the Soviets will meet Sweden.
