Misdemeanor charges involving cross burning have been reinstated against 13 neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members, including two members of The Order, a white supremacist group recently convicted of federal racketeering charges in Seattle, and Tom Metzger, a California Klan leader who was the Democratic Party’s losing candidate for a San Diego County congressional seat in 1980. The case stems from a December, 1983, incident outside a Kagel Canyon home in the San Fernando Valley. Los Angeles Municipal Court Judge Sidney Cherniss dismissed the charges in 1984 on a legal technicality, but prosecutors successfully appealed the dismissal to the Superior Court Appellate Department.
