Council Signs Pledges: City Council members have signed “pledges” of nonviolence to commemorate the first national celebration of the Rev. Martin Luther King’s birthday on Jan. 20. The actions symbolized a commitment to King’s philosophy that “nonviolence translates weakness into strength,” according to a resolution signed by the council. Civil rights activist King, who was slain by a sniper’s bullet in 1968, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his efforts on behalf of blacks and the poor and is famous for his “I Have a Dream” speech, made in Washington, D.C., before a crowd of about 250,000 people.
