The City Council this week unanimously upheld Planning Commission approval of revised plans for construction of American Honda Motor Co. Inc.’s headquarters at the former U. S. Steel site in east Torrance.
The original proposal covered 76 acres and six buildings with 1.24 million square feet of space. It was approved by the council in 1983.
Last year, the city Redevelopment Agency acquired through eminent domain an adjacent 25 acres of what the city considered a blighted area. That land then was sold to American Honda.
The new plans call for 10 buildings and an increase in space to 1.45 million square feet. The headquarters will include an administration building, a parts center, a research and development area, a cafeteria and an employee recreation center.
