A 25-year-old Canadian man drowned Wednesday after a rip current apparently dragged him away from the shore, San Diego County coroner’s deputies reported.
Osborne Dale Smith of Chemainus, British Columbia, was swimming with a friend in the ocean off Mission Beach near Ensenada Court when the pair were taken out to sea by a current about 2:40 p.m., deputies said.
Lifeguards rescued Smith, who apparently had panicked, about 300 yards offshore. He did not respond to cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was taken by Life Flight helicopter to UC San Diego Medical Center. He died about 4 p.m.
