Gulls Set Up Office in Ventura College Trailer

The Ventura Gulls, a Class-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, have opened a team office in Ventura.

Team owners Ken McMullen, Jim Biby and Jim Colborn began setting up business Wednesday in a trailer on the Ventura College campus.

The first order of business? Season tickets.

About 50 passes have been sold, McMullen said. His goal is to sell at least 400 before the season opens April 11.

Tickets for the Gulls’ 72 home games are available for $150.

Once the office is set up, Gulls management will begin preparing the stadium at Ventura College. McMullen said bleachers and preferred seating will be installed. Capacity is expected to be 1,200 to 1,600 spectators.

The Gulls, who are expected to move to Camarillo for the 1987 season, became official tenants Tuesday night following unanimous approval of a working agreement by the Ventura County Community College District Governing Board.

Brown Enters Sprintsat Sunkist Invitational

Alice Brown, a former Cal State Northridge sprinter and a resident of Panorama City, will run in the 50- and 60-yard dashes at the 27th Sunkist Invitational meet Jan. 17 at the Sports Arena.

Brown, 25, is a two-time Olympian and was part of the United States 4 X 100 team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Games. She also won a silver medal in the 100-meter dash, finishing second to Evelyn Ashford.

Olympians Florence Griffith, Merlene Oattey-Paige and Angela Bailey also are entered in the sprint field at the opening meet of the 1986 indoor season.

The world class competition begins at 7 p.m. High school events start at 4:45 p.m.

Encino League Forming for ‘Ultimate’ Frisbee

Registration and practice games will be held tonight at 8 p.m. at the Balboa Sports Center in Encino for an ultimate league.

Ultimate is a non-contact sport, played with a Frisbee, and is a combination of football and basketball. Two seven-player teams compete, trying to score goals on an 80-yard field.

The ultimate league, sponsored by the Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks Department, is set to begin Jan. 23 at the Balboa Sports Center on the corner of Balboa and Burbank boulevards. Up to six teams are expected to participate.
