Council Postpones Discussion of Vote on Ocean Drilling

Discussion of a plan by two Santa Monica City Council members to place an advisory measure before voters this year urging federal officials to prevent offshore drilling in Santa Monica Bay was continued to a future meeting by the City Council on Tuesday.
Council members Dennis Zane and James P. Conn would like to put the measure to city voters either in June or during the general election in November. Their proposal follows Hermosa Beach’s decision last month to place a similar measure on its ballot in April.
The measure opposes offshore drilling in the bay when it becomes available for leasing in 1987.
