The Los Angeles City Council reversed itself and denied a rate increase for CommuniCom Cable TV, the city’s largest cable television franchise. The financially troubled company, which has 35,000 subscribers in the Hollywood and West Los Angeles areas, had sought to triple its consumer fee for the cost of a converter box from $2 a month to $6.50. That change would have boosted the basic cost of the cable service from $10.50 to $14.90 a month, the highest in the city. However, the council, which had given its tentative approval to the rate hike last week, voted 7 to 6 against the proposal.
