Apartheid Symbols Stir Dartmouth Rift

HANOVER, N.H. — Dartmouth College students wielding sledgehammers Tuesday damaged shacks that had been built on the campus green to protest South Africa’s racial policies, a college spokesman said.
Campus police prevented the group of 15 students, which calls itself the Dartmouth Committee to Beautify the Green Before Winter Carnival, from removing the shanties. No arrests were made and no disciplinary action is contemplated immediately, campus authorities said.
More than 200 students who oppose Dartmouth’s $63 million worth of investments in companies doing business with South Africa later rallied on the Ivy League campus to protest the damage to the shanties.
