Unspeakable Rail Station Up for Sale

LLANFAIR PG, Wales — The railway station of this Welsh community is for sale, and the highest bidder will get more than a depot--he’ll get a mouthful.
The station has the longest name in Britain: Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrngogogoch. The 4,000 local residents, who call the station Llanfair PG for short, fear that it will be dismantled and taken out of the country.
The north Wales station, with its 58-letter platform sign, was turned into a tourist attraction in 1973 and no longer serves scheduled train runs. It attracts 200,000 visitors a year, who are photographed under the station name plate and receive instructions on how to pronounce the name with the six correct pauses.
