Historian Marcel Liebman Dies

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Marcel Liebman, a prominent historian and writer on socialism and communism, died after a long illness, the news agency Belga reported Sunday. Liebman, 56, a dedicated Marxist, died Saturday.
His published works included “The Russian Revolution,” an analysis of the 1917 Bolshevik revolution; “Leninism Under Lenin,” and “Born Jewish,” a description of his life during World War II, which was published in 1977 to critical acclaim.
He lectured on political science at Brussels University and was co-editor of the London-based Socialist Register, a leading Marxist publication.
“He was one of the few Belgian writers and analysts who was also known in the Anglo-Saxon world,” historian Jose Gotovitch said Sunday. “He was an independent socialist who refused to go with the trends.”
Liebman is survived by his wife, Adeline, and four children.
