OAKLAND — A small plane crashed into three parked cars and burst into flames Sunday in an Oakland neighborhood shortly after takeoff, but the pilot was pulled from the wreckage before it caught fire, officials said.
The Cessna 172 slammed into the cars near 66th Avenue and East 14th Street after taking off from Oakland International Airport three miles away, officials said.
“Thank God that the people ran up to the plane and pulled the man out because he would have been burned up,” a witness, Denise Johnson, said. “The plane smashed three cars, including my sister’s.”
The unidentified pilot escaped with minor injuries but was taken to a local hospital. Cause of the crash was not known.
