Santa Monica Studies Ban on Unofficial Use of City Seal

Use of the Santa Monica city seal in campaign literature or for other unofficial purposes would be prohibited under a law proposed by Mayor Christine E. Reed.
The proposal, which received first approval from the City Council last week, bars individuals from reproducing or using the seal. It also limits use of city stationery containing the seal to official city business and prohibits its use for political purposes. It permits organizations representing city employees to continue using the seal.
Reed proposed the law after the June, 1984, election when three councilmen used the seal in campaign letters favoring a ballot proposition.
Proposition Y, shifting city elections from April in odd-numbered years to November in even-numbered years, passed after a hotly contested election. Reed campaigned against the measure.
