NEW DELHI — The state government in Kashmir collapsed today under pressure from Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi over its failure to curb the worst Hindu-Muslim violence in the state since Indian independence.
Kashmir Chief Minister G. M. Shah and his cabinet ministers resigned today, a day after the state branch of the Congress Party, acting on Gandhi’s orders, withdrew its backing for Shah’s government. Kashmir Gov. Jag Mohan asked New Delhi to impose direct rule pending elections or the appointment of a new chief minister.
