More than 50,000 motorists have paid $6.5 million in delinquent vehicle registration fees during a three-month amnesty period, which has three weeks left, the Department of Motor Vehicles said. During the amnesty period that ends March 31, motorists can pay overdue registration fees without penalty; motorists failing to take advantage of the amnesty can expect hefty penalties after the amnesty ends. Starting April 1, the department will charge the registration fee plus 20% for the latest overdue year, 40% for the previous year and 80% for the year before that.
