Yucca Valley Meets Maricopa in Girls’ Small Schools Final

Yucca Valley, a school that opened in 1968, will make its first appearance in a Southern Section basketball championship game tonight, playing Maricopa for the girls’ Small Schools title at 7:30 at Taft High.
Yucca Valley, top-seeded in the playoffs with a 24-2 record, starts three juniors and two sophomores and went undefeated in De Anza League play for the second straight season.
Forwards Becky Geeson and Hilary Brown are averaging 20 points each this season. Geeson also averages 18 rebounds and Brown 14. Center Lisa DeHoff averages 8 rebounds, and guards Jamie Wilahlmson and Trina Anderson combine for an average of 22 steals a game.
Maricopa (19-4 and the No. 4-seeded team) is led by senior forwards Hayley Holmes and Tammy Nash, who combined for 29 points and 16 rebounds a game during the regular season.
