SAN JOSE — Laurence Jackson of Santa Monica High School ended his prep wrestling career in brilliant style Saturday, winning his third consecutive title at the State wrestling championships.
Jackson put on a masterly performance for a crowd of 6,500 at Independence High for the finals. The crowd, in turn, rewarded the three-time State champion with a standing ovation.
Jackson downed Wes Fehr of Nevada Union in the 136-pound final, 14-6, controlling the match from start to finish.
That was no small feat, considering that Fehr entered the match with a record of 52-0 and was State champion in Nevada last season.
None of that fazed Jackson, who raised his own record to 37-0. Jackson, who is also a three-time national freestyle wrestling champion, ended his prep career with 121 consecutive victories and 25 tournament championships.
Poway won the team title, outpointing Placentia El Dorado and Vacaville, which finished second and third, respectively.
