PEKING — More than 32,000 gamblers in the port city of Fuzhou turned themselves in to police during a campaign against gambling, a state-run newspaper said Sunday.
City police had promised Jan. 12 to give lenient treatment to gamblers who confessed within 10 days, the China Youth News said. Police said those who didn’t turn themselves in will receive harsh criminal sentences.
The paper said 13% of those who confessed ran illegal gambling operations.
Gambling has been outlawed since the Communist Party took power in 1949. However, it has reappeared in many cities, usually in the form of mahjong and poker.
