American League President Bobby Brown announced that he had denied a request by the Baltimore Orioles to rescind the trade with the Boston Red Sox involving infielder Jackie Gutierrez and pitcher Sammy Stewart.
The Orioles made the request because Gutierrez allegedly developed health problems that they were unaware of at the time of the trade.
Before the opening of spring training, the Orioles had Gutierrez in Baltimore for a series of examinations. However, he reported to camp a day before he was scheduled to arrive and has been since practicing with the club.
