Fountain Valley High School’s Baron Band has been invited to march in the second annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Beverly Hills, the school announced Wednesday.
The 1 1/2-hour parade will be staged at noon Sunday, and it will be telecast by Channel 11. The televised portion also will be beamed by satellite to Ireland. Veteran screen actor and dancer Gene Kelly will be grand marshal.
Band director Gary Wampler said: “The students are excited, especially since the parade’s down Rodeo Drive, with so many movie stars, and since it’s on TV.”
Wampler said there are 96 students in the band, which also participated in Ronald Reagan’s presidential inaugural in 1981. “We also performed in Hawaii last year,” he added.
The Barons, Wampler said, will have a special song for the Beverly Hills St. Patrick’s Day Parade. “It’s ‘When the Irish Backs Go Marching By,’ ” he said. “It’s a song from Notre Dame University.”
