May Department Stores said its fiscal fourth-quarter profit increased 9% over a year earlier. The St. Louis-based retailer said its net income for the three months ended Feb. 1 came to $119.9 million, compared to $110 million in the same period a year ago. Sales for the quarter edged up 0.6% to $1.135 billion. For the year, net income was up 10% to $235.4 million from $214.1 million the year before. Twelve-month sales gained 3.1% to $3.3 billion from $3.2 billion.
