College Softball : Fullerton Gets Scare but Comes Away With 2 Wins

Top-ranked Cal State Fullerton is among three teams with 3-0 pool-play records after two days at the PONY Invitational softball tournament at Fullerton.

Fullerton (23-3) survived a scare in its first game Friday afternoon when Michigan took the Titans to 11 innnings. Titan third baseman JoAnn Ferrieri’s single to left scored Chenita Rogers, who opened the inning at second in the international tiebreaker.

Susan LeFebvre picked up her 10th victory after relieving Connie Clark in the seventh, when Clark left with a strained back muscle.

In Fullerton’s second game Friday, the Titans benefited from five Adelphi errors to score a 3-0 victory. Terri Oberg’s RBI triple scored Rina Foster in the fifth to secure the win. LeFebvre got her 11th victory of the year and her third of the tournament.

In Cal State Northridge Tournament of Champions action:

Chapman 11, San Francisco State 2--The Panthers scored five runs in the first inning to give Pam Bell (2-0) all the support she needed. The game was called after four innings on time limit.

Chapman 3, Sacramento State 1--Sally Meyer’s two-run double highlighted a three-run third inning for the Panthers in a game which was halted on time limit after five innings.

Chapman 4, Augustana 1--Karen Yamaguchi led the Panthers, ranked No. 1 among the nation’s Division II schools, with three hits in four at-bats. Yamaguchi, who was 5 for 8 on the day, hit the first home run of her career in the sixth inning. Lori Tschetter added a three-run homer in the same inning. Chapman (19-5) continues pool play today.

In South Coast Conference action:

Rancho Santiago 1, Saddleback 0----Freshman Sandy Martinez tripled over the center fielder’s head in the bottom of the first and scored the only run on an overthrow by the third baseman. Sophomore Kim Martin (7-0) pitched a one-hitter for the win. Martin has given up only two earned runs in 53 innings this season for an earned-run averaged of 0.26. The Dons’ (4-0, 15-2) Lee Bladow had her nine-game hitting streak snapped one short of a school record.

Golden West 3, Fullerton 0 (8 innings)----Kelly Winkler singled in two runs in the top of the eighth to break a scoreless tie, and Stephanie Rowllett pitched a three-hitter for Golden West (3-1, 15-3).

Cypress 5, Mt. San Antonio--Karen Zupan went 3 for 4 with a triple to lead the Chargers (2-2, 16-7) to the win at Walnut. Char Schmitt added two hits and two RBIs.
