Former Dodger Burt Hooton was given his unconditional release Thursday by the Texas Rangers.
Hooton, 36, has a 151-136 career record but has been ineffective since the Rangers signed him as a free agent before the 1985 season. He was 5-8 with a 5.23 earned-run average last season, and this spring had a 1-0 record with a 4.91 ERA.
Hooton went directly from the University of Texas to the Chicago Cubs in 1971, then was traded to the Dodgers for Geoff Zahn and Eddie Solomon on May 2, 1975.
He won 112 games in 10 seasons with the Dodgers.
Hooton is guaranteed $575,000 from his contract this year and a $165,000 buy-out for his option year in 1987.
