NEW YORK — Hundreds of constituents lined 5th Avenue outside St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday to pay final respects to Rep. Joseph P. Addabbo, a man they sent to Congress 12 times.
“Some people look upon public life as a sacrifice, a kind of burden on their shoulders,” House Speaker Thomas P. (Tip) O’Neill Jr. (D-Mass.) told 2,000 people at the funeral inside the landmark cathedral. “Joe Addabbo was just the opposite. Joe Addabbo enjoyed every minute of it.”
Addabbo, 61, a Democrat from Queens who was first elected to Congress in 1960, died Thursday night of bladder cancer after more than a month in a coma.
