“LISTENING TO EVENING.” Allaudin Mathieu, composer/piano. Sona Gaia Productions, LP-137. This is music of thought rather than action. Too often it seems to stand still, even stagnate. Its mood is persistently melancholy; its simple harmonies repeat themselves and summon to mind the doleful “Gymnopedies” of Eric Satie. Melodies skip and leap, yet convey little sense of direction. Only the rhythms, drawn from jazz, create any feeling of life, motion or drive.
