Suspected Basque Attack Is Foiled

BILBAO, Spain — Police foiled an attack on a civil guard barracks by suspected Basque guerrillas near this northern port, authorities said Thursday.
They said that police Wednesday night found a stolen car near the barracks of the paramilitary guard with two anti-tank grenades in a timer-operated launcher aimed at the building.
The launcher was dismantled three minutes before it was set to fire.
Police said they suspected the Basque separatist group ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom), which last Monday fired seven rockets at the Defense Ministry in Madrid. Nine people were injured in the rocket attack and in a car-bombing several minutes later.
