Five elderly people were seriously injured Sunday when their car was struck as its driver attempted a U-turn on Irvine Center Drive in Irvine, police said.
The identities of the injured were not released, pending notification of family, said police Sgt. Jeff Kermode.
Kermode said the five were in a sedan that was making a turn in front of the entrance to a water amusement park when the accident occurred about 3 p.m. Only one person was in the other car and he was not hurt, police said.
Three of the injured were in critical condition at area hospitals, including a 79-year-old man with internal injuries and a 66-year-old woman with two broken legs and broken ribs, Kermode said.
Cause of the accident is under investigation.
