Texas Philanthropist Mary Northen Dies

GALVESTON, Tex. — Millionaire philanthropist Mary Moody Northen, matriarch of Texas’ third largest fortune who once sat at the head of 50 corporations, is dead at 94.
She had been hospitalized for more than a month with pneumonia when she died Monday.
Mrs. Northen, daughter of W.I. Moody Jr., took over American National Insurance Co. when her father died in 1954. She also became chairman of the board of trustees and was a founding member of the Moody Foundation, one of the largest philanthropic foundations in the nation.
