The Getty Conservation Institute has selected the University of Orviedo in Spain to conduct a two-year study on ways to measure deterioration in historic stone monuments.
The study will evaluate a sound-wave technique that could be used at the site of a monument so that stone samples need not be removed, officials said. The study will use five Spanish monuments for the research, comparing the sound-wave technique with more traditional methods of measuring weathering, they said.
The conservation institute and the J. Paul Getty Museum of Malibu are sponsored by the J. Paul Getty Trust.
